Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers speaks highly of Mikael Lustig.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has told The Daily Record that he wants Mikael Lustig to remain at the club.
Lustig has been on the books of the Glasgow giants since January 2012 and has a contract with the Bhoys until June 2017, according to The Daily Record.
Rodgers, who was appointed the Celtic manager in the summer, has stated that discussions over a new deal for the 29-year-old right-back are going on.
“Mikael’s one I definitely want to keep and the club are in discussions with his representatives,” Rodgers told The Daily Record. “He’s an important player for us, one of the pillars of the group.
“He’s a great character, motivated to train and a great professional. Mikael’s a fun guy but he knows when to focus.
“He’s a Scott Brown type in the dressing-room. He’s been excellent since I came in and I think he wants to stay.”
Lustig is a very good defender and has established himself as an important player in the current Celtic team.
It would make sense for the club and the player to come to an agreement that suits both of them.
Celtic are at the top of the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 40 points from 14 matches.
The Hoops are eight points clear of second-placed and Old Firm rivals Rangers, who have three games in hand.
The Bhoys will return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on Hamilton Academical at Celtic Park in the Scottish Premiership.
