Celtic winger James Forrest has been suffering with a hamstring injury.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has told the Glasgow Evening Times that it is ‘great news’ that James Forrest has returned to fitness quicker than he expected.

Forrest damaged his hamstring against Manchester City earlier this month, and there were fears that the injury was set to keep him out for a prolonged period of time.

However, the winger has got through training well this week – and he could now be available to feature in the Old-Firm derby next week.

“James is back and that is great news for the squad. He’s back a lot quicker than we thought he would be,” Rodgers said.

“He’s fit, looks strong and it’s a big credit to our medical team who have worked day and night with him.

“It’s a relief. He’s had injury issues over a few years but he is a big player for us. He has pace, power and has a goal-threat. You can see him in training that he’s looking really good.

“I like his type of player. I want my teams to have speed, mobility, power, unpredictability and he gives us all of that.”

Forrest is currently enjoying his most consistent run of form in a Celtic shirt ever.

The Scotland international has been a dangerous attacking option for Celtic ever since Rodgers took charge.

Forrest has made 26 appearances for the Bhoys in all competitions so far this season, and he has hit the back of the net on six occasions.

Celtic are next in action Hamilton tomorrow, but it is unlikely that Forrest will be risked from the start at New Douglas Park.
