Victor Wanyama, now at Tottenham Hotspur, moved to Southampton from Celtic in 2013, while Virgil van Dijk left the Hoops for the Saints in 2015.
Given that the Premier League is the richest domestic league in the world and the Scottish Premiership is not very competitive, it is hard for Celtic to turn down offers for their best players.
While it would be harsh to brand Celtic a ‘selling club’, the truth is that the Hoops have no choice but to part company with their best players if they get huge offers.
What does Brendan Rodgers make of it? The former Liverpool boss was appointed the Celtic manager in the summer of 2016.
“There comes a natural parting of the ways here at Celtic because there is a moral issue around it,” Rodgers told BT Sport when asked if Celtic are a selling club.
“If you are on 10 grand a week or 12 grand a week, but someone comes in and can offer you £80,000 a week, the reality is Celtic can’t afford that.
“We have already had that this year in terms of offers for players, and I sat in a board meeting and said, ‘We don’t need to do it’ so we didn’t need to do it. That’s the way it was. So there’s no drama.”
