Brendan Rodgers reportedly wanted Steven Caulker at Liverpool permanently in 2014

The then Cardiff City player had spent time on loan at Swansea City under the management of Rodgers.

This week has seen Liverpool look to strengthen their defensive options after a string of injury issues over the past few weeks.

With Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, Kolo Toure and Dejan Lovren all out injured the club decided to bring in Steven Caulker on loan from QPR – with his loan stint at Southampton being ended as a consequence.

It has come as something of a shock to see Caulker arrive at the club – as he has struggled for his best form in recent seasons after initially looking a top talent on loan from Swansea at Tottenham Hotspur.

Indeed, there was once a time when Liverpool were heavily linked with signing him on a permanent deal.

It was reported by The Telegraph in 2014 that Brendan Rodgers was a massive fan of the player – after working with him at Swansea City – and was keen to sign him from Cardiff City in the ensuing summer.

In the end Cardiff were relegated and Caulker headed to QPR where he has struggled to find his best form.

Now, just two years down the line, Caulker is being used as a fairly unpopular stop-gap by a completely different manager.

Hopefully Jurgen Klopp can get similar performances from him as Rodgers did at the Liberty Stadium.
