Emilio Izaguirre was superb as he made a rare start for Celtic in their latest Scottish Premiership game.
Brendan Rodgers has told BBC Sportsound that he thought that Emilio Izaguirre was superb during Celtic’s 5-1 victory over Kilmarnock on Saturday, and praised the way that the left-back adapted to being back in the team.
Izaguirre has been a peripheral figure for much of his second spell at Parkhead. Saturday was the first time that he has started a Scottish Premiership game since he rejoined the Hoops, but he showed why many believe that Celtic have both of the two best left-backs in the country on their books.
The Honduras international was fantastic considering that he has only played for 11 minutes since the end of August. His excellent cross created the Bhoys’ opening goal in the stunning victory that sent Rodgers’ men back to the top of the table.
And after the contest, Rodgers could not praise Izaguirre enough for the way that he had stepped in for Kieran Tierney.
“Emilio Izaguirre, you can’t not mention him, having been out for a while,” he told Sportsound.
“Emilio comes in and he knows exactly what out structure is. He was brilliant.”
One of the main reasons that many will now be tipping Celtic for another league title is that Rodgers is able to call players of Izaguirre’s calibre into the squad when he does not have his first-choice players available.
They have a remarkable amount of depth, and it will delight Rodgers that he does not need to worry about his plans if Tierney is unavailable at any stage during the rest of the campaign.
