Scott Bain enjoyed a Celtic debut to remember this afternoon.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Brendan Rodgers has paid tribute to Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain after his heroics in this afternoon’s electric Old Firm derby win over Rangers at Ibrox.
The Hoops, who played most of the second half with 10 men after Jozo Simunovic’s red card, twice came from behind to beat Graeme Murty’s in-form side 3-2, with Odsonne Edouard grabbing a fine winner.
It was a game in which a lot of attacking players on both sides emerged with plenty of credit, but Bain, who joined the Bhoys on a half-season loan in January, also made headlines for the right reasons.
The Dundee-owned goalkeeper produced a number of fine saves – including from Josh Windass and Alfredo Morelos in the dying minutes – after replacing an injured Dorus de Vries in the starting lineup.
Given the occasion, all eyes were on the 26-year-old to see how he would fare on the big stage, but Bain passed the test with flying colours and Rodgers claims that the keeper’s form in training left him in no doubt that he could handle himself.
He told Celtic’s official website: “I’m delighted for Scott Bain. When we brought him in, he’s been absolutely brilliant in training but, of course, for goalkeepers it takes something to happen for them to get an opportunity.
“He didn’t have too much time to think about it. We gave him an idea last night that he might be playing before telling him this morning that his first game for Celtic would be against Rangers at Ibrox. I thought his performance showed his nerve, his calmness and his agility, particularly when he makes the save and gets up again for the second one when it comes off the post.”
