Brendan Rodgers has confirmed to the Scotsman that Celtic defender Marvin Compper has now fallen behind Kristoffer Ajer in the pecking order for places.

Compper only joined Celtic in the January transfer window, but he has barely been able to show what he can offer so far.

The £1 million signing from Red Bull Leipzig has made just one appearance for Celtic since joining, with Rodgers favouring Ajer.

Leipzig's defender Marvin Compper runs with the ball during the Bundesliga match RB Leipzig vs SC Freiburg in Leipzig on April 15, 2017.

And Rodgers has confirmed that Compper will need his teammates’ form to dip, if he is to get a chance.

“It was difficult for Marvin because he was injured in Dubai during which put him out for a while,” Rodgers said.

“Then during that period, young Kris Ajer has come into the team and been absolutely outstanding. So there have been others ahead of Marvin.

“His qualities are pretty clear for us, his experience and his way of working with the younger guys in training.

“Of course, he wants to play as well but these aren’t fitness games we are playing. I’m certainly not sentimental. We need to pick a team that gets the results.

“Marvin is a good guy, I like him. Hopefully in his time here he gets a chance to show his qualities. But that’s only if other players aren’t playing so well.”

Ajer’s performances for Celtic have been quite remarkable, considering his lack of experience and his tender years.

The Norwegian has looked at home in Celtic’s defence, and is only expected to get better with more game-time under his belt.

Compper’s move to Parkhead already threatens to be one which won’t work out for either party, but the German will be hoping to make an impact before the end of the campaign.

Celtic are next in action against Rangers at the weekend, but it seems unlikely that Compper will feature in the Old-Firm clash.
