Jack Hendry has not had the best time since arriving at Celtic during the January transfer window.
Jack Hendry is certainly not the only Celtic player signed this year who has failed to live up to expectations following their move to Parkhead, but there is no doubt that the defender has struggled to hit the ground running since arriving from Dundee.
The 23-year-old has featured plenty of times since his January move but has certainly struggled to win the supporters over in his spell, and there will probably be some who will be worried that he may not prove to be good enough to be a mainstay at Celtic.
His latest chance to prove himself came in difficult circumstances at the weekend. Hendry was supposed to start the game against Kilmarnock on the bench, but a late injury to Filip Benkovic saw Brendan Rodgers promote the youngster into the side at Rugby Park. And unfortunately, the game did not go to plan for the Hoops.
Celtic were beaten 2-1 after taking the lead, and Hendry came in for a lot of criticism on social media after the contest. It was arguably slightly unfair given that he was not expecting to start, but it perhaps makes Rodgers’ next move regarding Hendry particularly crucial for the defender’s Celtic career.
It would perhaps say a fair amount if Rodgers dropped Hendry for the trip to St Johnstone in the League Cup on Wednesday, especially as the Celtic boss’ options are already being stretched due to injury.
But if he decided to keep faith with Hendry for the cup tie, that could potentially send out quite a statement regarding the confidence that Rodgers has that the defender will come good in the future.
Hendry was poor at the weekend, but keeping him in the lineup could be exactly what he needs at what could potentially prove to be a key moment in his Celtic career.
