Celtic midfielder Kouassi Eboue has featured just four times so far this season in all competitions.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is seen during a training session at Lennoxtown on December 29, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Brendan Rodgers has told the Scotsman that the only reason Eboue Kouassi has not been playing for Celtic is because of Scott Brown.

Kouassi was signed by Celtic last January, but he has struggled to make an impact at Parkhead.

The 20-year-old has featured just four times in all competitions this term, with Rodgers favouring other options.

And the Northern Irish boss now admits that Kouassi could be sent out on loan in the coming weeks.

Eboue Kouassi of Celtic arrives at the stadium prior to the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on March 12, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Eboue was brought in and he plays a specific role; the Scott Brown role,” said Rodgers.

“It just so happens that Scott is the captain – who’s been brilliant – so it’s been difficult for Eboue.

“Browny is one I’ve taken out the odd time, bringing Eboue in, but there’s no doubt he hasn’t played a number of games. That’s not because of him, it’s because of the form of our captain.

“Eboue’s one who is brilliant in training, he does everything and, longer term, he will certainly fulfil that role when Scott moves on.

“But, while we wait for that day, we need to ensure Eboue is developing and improving. That might mean game time in the second part of the season. He needs to be playing.”

Whether Rodgers would look to loan Kouassi out to a Scottish club or abroad remains to be seen.

It seems unlikely that Kouassi will be given a chance of a regular run of games at Celtic any time soon though, as Brown remains such an important player.

The Scottish international has been a virtual mainstay in Rodgers’ team, and his commanding performances have earned a lot of credit.

Celtic are currently top of the Scottish Premiership table by eight points, with Rodgers’ side currently enjoying a well deserved rest from competitive action over the winter break.
