Brendan Rodgers has suggested that a decision on Celtic loanee Filip Benkovic’s future will be made in the summer.
In comments reported by Leicestershire Live, Brendan Rodgers has hinted that Celtic summer signing Filip Benkovic being loaned out again next season could be something that Leicester City consider.
Benkovic moved to the Premier League last summer in a £13 million move, but the Foxes immediately sent the centre-back to Parkhead to work under Rodgers, who of course, is now at the helm at the King Power Stadium and will now decide what Benkovic’s future looks like.
The Croatian has been a very good signing for the Hoops. When he has been fit, he has arguably been the club’s best centre-back this term – though Kristoffer Ajer is now threatening to push him – and it would be a huge boost for the Bhoys if they could keep him at Parkhead beyond this season.
And while Rodgers made it clear that no decision has yet been made, he certainly seemed to leave the door open for another loan move to be considered at the end of the year.
“Unfortunately he picked up an injury in the Rangers game at Christmas and since then it has been a bit difficult for him, but as a 21-year-old, 6’4” imposing centre half who can play football, he is a big talent,” he said, as reported by Leicestershire Live. “We will have a look in the summer. The idea was to get him out on loan where he can get experience and feel pressure.
“He obviously he has been playing at Celtic with 60,000 plus and the weight of expectation to win every game, so he was going to be okaying with pressure. That is what he has done, not so much the second half of the season, but we will take him back and have a look to see where we go from there.”
It would be fantastic for Celtic to sign Benkovic again. He has been an inspired addition, with the Hoops only conceding goals in eight of the 24 games he has played for the club in all competitions.
The Daily Record reports that Dedryck Boyata’s contract expires in the summer, so Neil Lennon, or whoever the next boss is, will need to make signings in that area of the field. Getting Benkovic back would be a superb way for the champions to kick off their window.
