Celtic strolled to a 3-0 win against Inverness, but it was not one of the goalscorers that Rodgers was particularly impressed by.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has told the club’s official website that he was hugely impressed with Stuart Armstrong’s performance during the club’s emphatic 3-0 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday.

Armstrong had begun the game at Parkhead in a conventional midfield position, but was soon moved to right-back when Mikael Lustig had to be taken off after just 15 minutes.

But despite playing in an unfamiliar role, the 24-year-old shone against the club he was once affiliated to as an academy prospect, and Rodgers could only repeat one superlative to describe his display.

“I thought he was brilliant today. He adapted well, there was no drama and I thought he played the position really well and should have scored,” he told the club’s official website.

“He was up and down that wing. He did brilliantly to adapt to the position. He’s played a real central role for me and I can see him developing and progressing his game, day in, day out. He’s getting confidence and he’s now looking the part. His energy from midfield is important for us, but to slot into that right-back role today, I thought he was brilliant.”

Having somewhat struggled to fully establish himself in the Bhoys’ squad since his arrival in 2015, Armstrong will surely be delighted about the amount of faith that Rodgers clearly has in him.

The Northern Irishman’s belief in the midfielder appears to be giving him huge amounts of confidence that allow him to continue contributing to the team no matter where he is deployed on the pitch.

And if he continues to impress like he did against Caley, it may not be too long before Armstrong becomes one of the very first names on Rodgers’ teamsheet.
