Brendan Rodgers – Have Liverpool pressed the panic button?

It wasn’t a major surprise when Brendan Rodgers was unveiled as the new Liverpool Manager as he is so highly rated.

He had done very well at Swansea City and the style of play was great to watch.

My fear is that Liverpool is a totally different club; I hope Rodgers style works, but I really can’t see it happening.

Don’t get me wrong I wish him and Liverpool all the best I just can’t help thinking Liverpool have somewhat pressed the panic button with this appointment.

They are not the ‘super power’ of European football that they used to be and may be this appointment shows that.

Don’t get me wrong; Rodgers did a fine job at Swansea and in their first season in the big time they finished comfortably in mid table. I think we’d have seen what he was really about in his second season, could he elevate them into the top ten and beyond?

A word of warning, just remember he wasn’t ‘all that’ at Reading, although his unsuccessful spell there will undoubtedly have improved and hardened him as a manager.

Not that I’m a gambling man but I would have stuck a few quid on Rafa Benitez returning to Anfield. Since he left he struggled in Italy but he loves Liverpool and I’m sure this time around he’d have been extra-motivated to prove a point and win the Premier League.

Now after saying all that I don’t think Liverpool is that far away from being a really good side, despite their struggles at the end of last season.

They have a world class goalkeeper and a pretty good defence; I think the weak link is in midfield and up front.

Steven Gerrard won’t last forever, Charlie Adam hasn’t cut it, and with the exception of the young lad Sterling, I can’t see any great players coming through.

I believe Carroll will come good in the end given the time. Can he fit into Rodgers style of football? That is still to be determined.

As I’ve said before I wish both Rodgers and Liverpool well but I have the feeling it will all end in tears until they get in a ‘big’ name, more adept at handling the pressure which comes with managing such a big club.
