Celtic boss will not fix Arsenal’s suspect defence.

Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers celebrates at full time during the Ladbrokes Premiership match between Hearts and Celtic at Tynecastle Stadium on April 2, 2017 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is a contender to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal this summer, according to The Mail.

Rodgers has got his managerial career back on track at Celtic after his spell at Liverpool ended dramatically.

He has won a league title at Celtic and is on course to clinch a second, but he is not the right man for Arsenal.

Poor European results are the basis for this sweeping statement, and it is underpinned by a leaky defence.

Celtic conceded seven goals away to PSG, three to Bayern and three against Zenit St Petersburg on their way to being eliminated from two competitions.

Even at Liverpool, Rodgers’ defence was his downfall, with the Reds infamously losing 6-1 to Stoke City under his management.

Defence has been Arsene Wenger’s blindspot too in recent seasons, and whoever comes in next at Arsenal needs to be a master tactician who can turn their problems around.

The Gunners have conceded 36 goals in the Premier League this season, more than any team in the top seven – including Burnley.

It is an issue they need to address, but Brendan Rodgers has not proven he is capable of doing it, having been let down by his backline at Liverpool and Celtic. It’s a trend Arsenal can’t afford to gamble on.
