Brendan Rodgers has praised the “absolutely exceptional” Callum McGregor following Celtic’s demolition of Hearts on Saturday.
Rodgers’s side thumped the Jambos 5-0 at Parkhead yesterday to move within a point of the Premiership summit.
McGregor, who earns £7,500 per week at Celtic [Daily Star], set up Filip Benkovic for the Hoops’ second of the afternoon with a beautiful delivery from a corner.
It was the 24-year-old’s fourth assist of the season in all competitions, and Rodgers has told The Record that it’s simply a joy to watch McGregor play football.
“He controls the tempo of the game. He is a boy that takes the ball, so clever in his movements and we ask him to go into certain area of the pitch to offer support.
“He has a dream of a touch which allows him to go forward. His feet are nice and soft, he doesn’t playing backwards so much and he has a great range of passes and he has the personality now to play those passes, not just one that is secure to keep the ball, he can break a line with a pass and open up and split up the game for us.
“He has been absolutely exceptional in that role but I say that everywhere he plays.”
McGregor is one of a number of players who have improved remarkably since Rodgers was appointed back in 2016.
He was always a tidy footballer, but the Northern Irishman has taken him to a new level entirely in recent years and that’s testament to his man-management abilities.
As for the team as a whole, it looks very probable that the all-conquering Hoops side that won back-to-back domestic trebles under Rodgers is officially ‘back’.
Up until a few weeks ago it had been a miserable season for Celtic, who have now won seven Premiership games in a row and scored 25 goals in the process, conceding just twice in that run.
