Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has told STV that he will be looking to bring in a new striker this summer, as Leigh Griffiths needs help in the final third.
Former Liverpool boss Rodgers was appointed as Ronny Deila’s replacement last month, and whilst the Champions League qualifiers are closing in, Rodgers has yet to make his first foray into the transfer market as Celtic manager.
A number of areas need some attention this summer, but given the departures already this summer, it’s clear that a new striker is needed at Celtic Park.
Carlton Cole has been released from his contract following a poor spell in Glasgow, whilst Colin Kazim-Richards – who only arrived from Feyenoord in the winter transfer window – has been allowed to leave for Brazilian side Coritiba.
Nadir Ciftci may have returned from his loan spell with Turkish club Eskisehirspor, but star striker Leigh Griffiths needs more support in the final third.
The Scotland international finished last season with 40 goals in 52 games, enjoying a remarkable season as he became Scottish football’s most feared striker.
He had little support around him though, and with two strikers already gone, manager Rodgers has been asked whether he intends to bring in another striker this summer.
Rodgers, speaking to STV, admitted that he felt Griffiths was fantastic last season, he also thinks that the Scot needs help because of the amount of fixtures Celtic will play next season – and ultimately confirmed that he needs to bring in another striker this summer
“It’s one of the areas. Young Leigh was fantastic last year. To get 40 goals and to carry that mantra right the way through the season as one of the only strikers at the club, I thought he had an amazing season.”
“But he needs help. You’ve got a 50-60-game season, trying to challenge in Europe as well as the cup competitions and the league. You have to have a balanced squad, and that will certainly be an area we need to look at,” he added.
