Demarai Gray made an immediate impression on new Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers.

Gray scored Leicester’s opener last night against Brighton, with new boss Rodgers watching on.

From Rodgers’ perspective, this has been a long time coming.

Gray was reportedly on his list of transfer targets while Liverpool manager.

The Mail reported in early 2015 that Rodgers’ Liverpool were keenly tracking Gray’s progress at Birmingham City.

At one stage the Birmingham Mail were pressed into reporting that there was on ‘first option clause’ agreed with Rodgers’ Liverpool, after claims to the contrary.

Rodgers was fired by Liverpool later in 2015, and Gray signed for Leicester in January 2016.

At Celtic there was no possibility for Rodgers to sign the winger, and their paths did not cross.

Now Rodgers finally has the chance to work with the former England under-21 international.

Gray has stagnated over the past 12 months under Claude Puel, failing to step up with consistency since Riyad Mahrez’s sale.

Last night’s goal was his fourth of the season.

Rodgers could be the man to coax the best out of the 22-year-old.
