Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he advised Scott Brown against playing against Ross County on Wednesday.

The Bhoys were back in league action on Wednesday night having beaten Rangers 1-0 in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday, and it was another victory for Rodgers’ side.

Patrick Roberts gave Celtic an early lead after just three minutes, and the Bhoys had to wait 80 minutes to make it 2-0, as Stuart Armstrong grabbed the second before Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele notched injury time goals to seal a 4-0 victory.

Celtic sit seven points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a game in hand on second placed Aberdeen, meaning Rodgers has plenty to smile about right now.

Another Celtic man who has a lot to smile about is club captain Scott Brown, whose wife gave birth to their third child on Tuesday.

Brown, 31, wasn’t in the squad at all as Celtic took on Ross County, and Rodgers has opened up on his pre-match discussion with the midfielder when speaking to the Glasgow Evening Times.

Rodgers revealed that Brown wanted to play a part in the game, but the Celtic boss told him to stay at home with his wife, as ‘family is more important than football’.

Rodgers ultimately thinks Brown will benefit from missing out, as he’ll return for this weekend’s game against Aberdeen ‘super fit, fresh and strong’.

“He is getting together his wee five-a-side football team,” joked Rodgers. “That is three boys he’s got now. He wanted to come. I said: ‘listen, look after your wife, family is more important than football’. It is nice for him to get a breather.”

“He is going to go into the game super fit and fresh and strong and now a father of three. They are all feeling good. He breathes football Scotty so I am sure he will be looking forward to it,” he added.
