Celtic are currently eight points clear of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

Eight-in-a-row was always on the cards for Celtic this season. The treble-treble was even visible in the not too distant future. Then, Brendan Rodgers opted to leave the club abruptly and provide Rangers with the fuel they need in the title race.

On Tuesday, Premier League side Leicester City confirmed on their official Twitter account that Rodgers has left his role in Glasgow to take over the reins at the King Power Stadium.

Rodgers’ decision to leave is not what’s surprising. His decision to leave months before he was going to deliver a potential treble-treble is what’s going to irate the Celtic faithful more. Not forgetting that he has left for a team that is sitting mid-table in England’s top-flight.

It is an unforgivable decision by the Northern Irishman, who has now provided Rangers with an unnecessary boost to close the eight-point lead their rivals hold in the Scottish Premiership table.

Since the turn of the year, it has become clearer game by game that Steven Gerrard was unlikely to stop eight-in-a-row from occurring as the Bhoys began steamrolling their opponents in the Premiership. Meanwhile, the Gers continued to stumble at the wrong moments and key man Alfredo Morelos enjoyed seeing the colour red pointed at his face.

While Celtic’s senior players will ensure that eight-in-a-row still happens at the end of the season, the events of Tuesday will remain baffling. There is clearly a deeper issue behind this, but regardless of what it is, the club’s priorities always come first.

Before the season draws to a close, there are two more Old Firm matches to be played and Gerrard will be well aware that winning those matches is their biggest hope of lifting the title.

Truth be told, the only positive to come out of Celtic Park following recent events is the return of the forthright and ever so popular Neil Lennon [Celtic website].
