Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has told the club’s official Twitter account that defender Kristoffer Ajer could be out for up to six weeks after picking up an injury against St Johnstone.

The Bhoys were in Scottish League Cup action on Wednesday night as they travelled to take on St Johnstone, just days after losing 2-1 to Kilmarnock in the league.

A response was needed from Brendan Rodgers’ side, but it looked like being another frustrating night as Celtic couldn’t break down Tommy Wright’s Saints side.

Leigh Griffiths did pop up with the winning goal late on though, handing Celtic a 1-0 win and a passage into the semi-finals of the competition – though Dedryck Boyata was sent off late on for Celtic.

After a tough few days filled with criticism, Celtic got the win they needed – but boss Rodgers was faced with some bad news in the aftermath of Wednesday’s game.

Defender Kristoffer Ajer lasted just 33 minutes at McDiarmind Park before being replaced by Jack Henry, with the Norwegian clearly in some discomfort with an injury.

After the game, Rodgers told the club’s official Twitter account that Ajer suffered a hamstring injury, and whilst Celtic are waiting for official confirmation, the giant centre back could be out for up to six weeks.

“Yeah, it will be a hamstring injury,” said Rodgers. “We’ll see in the next day or two how long that’s going to be, but it could be four to six weeks,” he added.
