Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has compared Scott Brown’s persona with his former Liverpool star Luis Suarez.

Rodgers has been calling for greater protection for Brown after he was stamped on during Celtic’s win against Ross County, an incident the manager labelled as ‘disgraceful’.

Rodgers accepts that Brown can wind up opposition supporters, but wants fair treatment for his captain.

He compared him with current Barcelona forward Luis Suarez.

Rodgers told The Telegraph: “He has a personality that winds people up but I had the same with Luis Suarez.

“Every ground you went to it was a carnival to get at him, but he would always perform. Browny is one of those players.

“If he plays for you, you love him and adore him. If he doesn’t, you think he’s a pantomime character.”

Brown is expected to be fit for Celtic’s match with Dundee this evening, where they are seeking to close in on a seventh successive title victory.

The Celtic midfielder has not been sent off this season, and has refused to react negatively to the robust treatment meted out to him by opposition, rising above it.

Brown does bring out a ‘love to hate him’ side of opposition fans, and while he does not possess the unique individual talents of Luis Suarez, while he keeps on winning games and leading Celtic to titles, he will retain his place as an icon of this Celtic side.
