Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos signed a new contract at Ibrox last Friday.

It came as a surprise, after days of stories linking him to clubs outside Scotland.

In a way, it all started to make sense.

All the stories being floated out to the media likely stemmed from Morelos and his agents, in order to pressure Rangers into offering him an extension.

It’s how it works. Why else would there be a repeated stream of transfer rumours in mid-March over one striker, with Leicester City, Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt all keen, Sky Sports reported.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers was quizzed about interest in Morelos at one of his press conferences after quitting Celtic to take the job with the Foxes.

Rodgers responded, telling The Scottish Sun: “I think someone is trying to wind someone up.”

Rodgers seemed to be right, distancing himself from speculation.

Days later, Morelos signed a new deal, only after links to Germany intensified.

Rangers decided they could not afford to risk Morelos’ departure, signing the Colombian to an extension until 2023.

It’s hard to see him staying all the way until his deal ends, but it does keep Rangers in control over his future.
