Celtic were linked with Hibernian midfielder John McGinn in the summer transfer window.

Manager of Celtic Brendan Rodgers looks on during the Betfred Cup Semi-Final at Hampden Park on October 21, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has told The Daily Record that he likes Hibernian midfielder John McGinn.

Rodgers shared his admiration of John McGinn following Celtic’s 2-2 draw with Hibernian away from home at Easter Road in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

The 23-year-old Scotland international started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes.

Celtic's head coach Brendan Rodgers talks during a press conference in Brussels on September 26, 2017 on the eve of the Champions League group B) football match against RSC Anderlecht.

Celtic manager Rodgers has said that he likes McGinn, but the former Liverpool and Swansea City boss believes that the ex-St. Mirren star did not win the contest against Scott Brown in the midfield during this afternoon’s match.

When asked about the duel, Rodgers told The Daily Record: “There is no contest. Scott Brown is the outstanding midfielder in Scotland. I like McGinn… but he’s got a way to go before reaching that level.”

McGinn was linked with a move to Celtic in the summer transfer window, with The Express reporting in June 2017 that manager Rodgers was interested in signing the Scotland international.

While it is clear from Rodgers’s aforementioned comments that he rates the 23-year-old, perhaps they also suggest that he does not think that he is good enough to replace midfielder Brown just yet.
