Brendan Rodgers comments on Dedryck Boyata’s Celtic future

Dedryck Boyata is out of contract at Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic in the summer of 2019.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has suggested to The Scottish Sun that he would understand if Dedryck Boyata leaves in the January transfer window.

Boyata joined Celtic from Manchester City in the summer of 2015 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £1.5 million.

According to The Scottish Sun, the Belgium international central defender is out of contract at the Glasgow giants at the end of the season.

Celtic manager Rodgers has suggested that he would understand if the 28-year-old – who earns £14,000 per week as salary, according to The Daily Star – leaves the Glasgow giants in the January transfer window.

Rodgers told The Scottish Sun about Boyata: “Careers are short. There has been no lack of commitment from Boyata since last summer as you have seen.

“But as a professional player he has every right to wait and see what happens. I can assure everyone that doesn’t take away from his commitment to what we’re doing here.

“The next contract may be the last big one of his career as he is 28 now, and he just has to make sure it’s the right one.”

Blow for Celtic?

Boyata is a good player for Celtic, and it will be a blow for the Glasgow giants if he does leave in the January transfer window.

What is important for the Hoops is that they sign a suitable replacement as soon as possible in the January transfer window and do not make a delay.

Celtic need a capable defender in order to be successful in Scotland and in the Europa League.
