Craig Gordon is on the brink of returning for Celtic.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has welcomed the “great news” that fit-again Craig Gordon is on the verge of his return to action.
The Celtic goalkeeper has been missing since January with a knee injury, but Rodgers has claimed that the 35-year-old recovered quicker than expected.
Scott Bain, signed on loan from Dundee after Gordon’s injury, has impressed in his absence but is ineligible to face his parent club when Neil McCann’s side visit Parkhead on Wednesday night.
Consequently, Gordon could be in line for a recall and Rodgers claims that will indeed be the case if the Scotland keeper declares himself fit for duty.
He told Sky Sports News: “We are just going to check with Craig just to make sure everything is ok but he has been back in training and if he declares himself fit and ready then he will play.
“He has come back a bit earlier than we thought so Scott has been great in the games he has played however with him not being able to play against Dundee [parent club] we have been looking to replace him.
“Craig has been brilliant on his rehab. He has come back and worked very hard and got himself ahead of schedule which is great news.”
If Gordon plays and impresses, it leaves Rodgers with a dilemma for the visit to Hamilton on Sunday, and then of course the Scottish Cup semi-final clash with Rangers at Hampden the following week.
It would be hugely harsh on Bain if his ineligibility tomorrow night leads to him playing second fiddle for the rest of the season, but that is the life of a goalkeeper after all and he must stick to his task and try usurp Gordon, if Rodgers continues to pick him after tomorrow night.
