Celtic have some very big names in need of new contracts.

Brendan Rodgers has told The Scottish Sun that Celtic must ‘sort out’ some players’ new contracts.

Three major Celtic players – Scott Brown, Mikael Lustig and Dedryck Boyata – are out of contract at Parkhead next summer, while the same applies to fringe members of Rodgers’s squad such as Scott Allan, Emilio Izaguirre and Cristian Gamboa.

The Hoops have signed the likes of Leigh Griffiths, Olivier Ntcham and Ryan Christie up to new deals in recent weeks and months, but the Northern Irish manager told the Scottish Sun that more players need extensions.

Rodgers said: “There are one or two players, contract-wise, who we, as a club, need to sort out.”

Lustig and Brown are key players for Celtic, but signing up Boyata would be by far the biggest boost in the long term.

The Belgium centre-back, the subject of a £9 million bid during the summer, is only 27 and if the Hoops could get him re-signed before January then it guarantees a significant transfer fee, otherwise he’s leaving for free in the summer.

Lustig and Brown are 32 and 33 respectively, and although both have a lot to offer still, their influences will begin to wane in the coming years whereas Boyata might well improve yet.
