Emilio Izaguirre has just six months remaining on his contract at Celtic, but Brendan Rodgers wants to keep him in Glasgow.
Brendan Rodgers has told the Daily Record that he intends to have a conversation with Emilio Izaguirre about his future at Celtic in the near future.
Izaguirre’s contract at Celtic expires at the end of the season, and there are some question marks over whether the left-back will remain at Parkhead.
At the start of the season the Honduran international appeared to have little future with the Bhoys.
Izaguirre slipped behind Kieran Tierney in the pecking order for Celtic, and was finding first-team chances hard to come by.
However, since Tierney has been ruled out with injury, Izaguirre has come into Rodgers’ starting line-up and impressed.
And Rodgers said: “He has done extremely well. Kieran is a special talent but Emilio came in and did very well for us in a tough run of games.
“I like Emilio, he’s very robust, trains every day, he works hard and is very professional. If I have Kieran and Emilio as starter and cover player then I’d be happy.
“We’ll talk more on that between now and the end of the season.”
Another Celtic player who could be in line to sign a new contract is Mikael Lustig.
The Swedish defender is expected to put pen to paper in the near future, after successful talks with the Bhoys.
“I believe there’s progress,” Rodgers confirmed. “I met with Peter Lawwell before I came away and I believe one is not too far away. Hopefully that can be done.”
Celtic are next in action on 22nd January, when they take on Albion Rovers in the Scottish Cup.
