Brendan Rodgers admits Cristian Gamboa has had a tough time at Celtic this season

Celtic defender Cristian Gamboa has played just one game for Brendan Rodgers’ side this term.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted to the Scotsman that this season has been tough for Cristian Gamboa to date.

Gamboa has made just one appearance for Celtic so far this term, with other options being favoured over the Costa Rican.

However, Rodgers has suggested that Gamboa could start for Celtic this evening, when they take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

And the Northern Irish boss admits that Gamboa has been unlucky not to feature more for the Bhoys.

“It’s been unfortunate for Cristian,” Rodgers said. “He was away over pre-season. Tony [Ralston] came in and did really well along with Mikael, so it’s been tough for him.

“He went away with his international team and got a bit of game time and I thought he was very good against Dundee.”

If Gamboa is thrown into Celtic’s line-up tonight, Rodgers could hardly have given the former West Bromwich Albion man a tougher test.

Celtic are set to take on a buoyant Bayern side, who have just put Jupp Heynckes back in charge.

Celtic won their last match in the Champions League when they beat Anderlecht, and if they can avoid defeat tonight, it would take them a step closer to qualifying for the knockout stages.
