Celtic were rocked last week on Brendan Rodgers’ decision to walk out on the club and join Leicester City.

His reasoning for not wanting to wait is still unclear, other than that he thought the opportunity would not be there for him at the end of the season.

It is no coincidence that Rodgers’ exit comes after Celtic had been eliminated from Europe for another year, losing to Valencia in the Europa League.

He may simply have lost motivation.

Rodgers hinted this was his stance back in 2017, in comments reported by The Guardian.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is seen during a training session at Lennoxtown Training Centre on April 27, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rodgers said that European football was his yardstick, and he was not bothered by Celtic’s domestic rivals, naming Rangers.

He said: “Our measure is that we want to be the best we can be. We know what it takes to compete in European football. That’s our measure.

“Some people will say we need a strong Rangers, strong Aberdeen, strong Hibs – but that’s no good if you’re not strong.

“I don’t need, with all due respect, to know what Rangers are doing or Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts to motivate me.”

Rodgers’ exploits with Celtic in European football were ultimately a failure. This season they did not even reach the Champions League group stages.

In the Europa League they were eliminated out in the first knock out round.

Yes there were trophies still to be won for Rodgers at Celtic this season, but it seems he was content with the ones he did win, and simply wanted a bigger challenge.
