Leicester City were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League on the final matchday of the group stage, and the Foxes have now missed out on a potential clash against FC Barcelona.
The Catalan giants crashed out of the UEFA Champions League as Xavi Hernandez’s side finished third in their group, meaning Barcelona will play in the Europa League for the first time in 17 years.
Due to a refresh of the Europa League format, clubs from the Champions League will now face the second-place sides in a play-off for a spot in the Round of 16, with Barcelona being drawn against Napoli, who came second in Leicester’s group.
With Brendan Rodgers’ side losing to the Serie A side on matchday 6 and a missed last-second penalty in Legia Warsaw’s match sending Leicester down to third, a historic night at the King Power has slipped through the Foxes’ fingers.
With Leicester set to now compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League, the Premier League side have been dealt a one-two blow this afternoon following Napoli’s draw with Barcelona.
After all, a tie against one of the biggest clubs in Europe would have been an incredible experience for all Leicester fans, with Barcelona being in the Europa League an interesting situation as a whole.
