Brendan Galloway could have joined Newcastle United last summer.
New Sunderland signing Brendan Galloway, who joined the club on loan from Everton, has revealed that he was close to joining Newcastle United last summer.
Newcastle were plying trade in the Championships in 2016/17, and had cast their eye on the 21-year-old versatile defender.
Everton’s Brendan Galloway in action
The defender opted to join Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion, on loan, last season despite a protracted pursuit from the Magpies.
He returned to Everton on the back of a disappointing campaign, having made just five appearances, and that “frustrating experience” has made him a stronger person.
“There was a lot of frustration last season,” said Galloway, as quoted by the Sunderland Echo.
“I had to deal with that, I have learned how to deal with things off the pitch mentally. I have become a stronger person and now I am looking forward to the challenge.
“There was a chance I could have gone to Newcastle last summer, but now I prefer Sunderland anyway!”
Since joining the club, Galloway has been a regular in the early pre-season schedule.
He was substituted at half-time on Saturday following a poor opening 45 minutes. The youngster has shown signs of promise and is excited at the prospect of working with Simon Grayson.
One thing is for sure, Galloway will get a lot of opportunities in the Championship. He is a talented player, and all he needs is regular games under his belt to boost his confidence.
