Rangers’ search for a manager continues.
Glasgow Rangers’ hopes of appointing former player Derek McInnes to Ibrox appear to have been dealt a major blow.
Aberdeen have released a statement confirming Rangers have finally made an official approach for McInnes – and that it has been rejected.
The statement on the club official website reads: “Aberdeen Football Club has announced this evening that Rangers have contacted the Club asking for permission to speak to Derek McInnes and that permission has been refused.”
It is unclear whether Aberdeen’s refusal to allow McInnes to talk with Rangers is a non-negotiable ‘no’, or if an improved compensation package from the Gers could tempt them to reconsider.
Rangers fired Pedro Caixinha in October and are yet to appoint a replacement.
McInnes was the early favourite and has remained so, but there had been no action on this until this evening.
Rangers have won their last two matches against Aberdeen to climb above the Dons on goal difference, winning 3-0 and 2-1 this past week under caretaker Graeme Murty.
