Leeds United have been linked to James Milner. Fans are understandably excited, but it’s all circumstantial.

Leeds United have been linked over the past week to former star James Milner.

Re-signing the midfielder would be a dream move, but we would advise fans not to get carried away.

Here is a look at a breakdown of how the rumours transpired.

26/9: Teamtalk report as lead headline in their gossip column: ‘Milner gives Leeds hope.’

The problem with this, is there was nothing new. The report referenced a claim in the Daily Star which said James Milner ‘will’ look for a return to Leeds if they win promotion to the Premier League next summer.

The Star’s report was five days old, and it was not an original. It did not say Milner ‘will’ look for a move to Leeds. It just said ‘it could raise the possibility’ of a move to Leeds, if they win promotion.

The report in The Star referenced The Mail as a source. So already at this point the speculation looks more than a little suspect.

The Mail‘s report is based on the fact Milner’s contract expires in 2020, and he has not yet been offered a new one.

It speculates: “A move abroad remains an attractive proposition, while a Leeds promotion to the top flight could raise the likelihood of an emotional return to Elland Road.”

That report emerged back on September 20. For that to be twisted a week on, appears to be very clearly misleading.

It isn’t impossible of course. If Leeds win promotion, then all bets are off on what they can do in the transfer market, and players will be queuing up to join.

First they need to clear that hurdle.
