Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has suggested a new defender to Jurgen Klopp after Virgil van Dijk’s potentially season-ending injury.

The Dutchman was at the wrong end of a terrible tackle from Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby, and he is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Many have claimed that Liverpool’s title chances are now over due to their star defender’s injury.

Van Dijk is arguably Liverpool’s most important player. Without him, they look extremely shaky at the back, and teams will be a lot more confident of getting a result against a Reds side without the Dutchman.

Carragher, however, feels that Liverpool can still rescue their season if they bring in a new centre-half in January. The former Reds star has even suggested a player who is deemed by many as one of the best young defenders in world football.

Carragher wants Upamecano at Liverpool

He said on Sky Sports Football (October 19, 2020, 7:18pm): Liverpool’s next signing had to be a centre-back next summer anyway. That was the next one, that has to be brought forward to 1st January – not the end of the month.

“Upamecano, at Leipzig, there’s talk of him. He’s not the profile of Van Dijk. But that’s the one Liverpool wanted next summer. Bring it forward, pay the extra money and do it on January 1st. That means Liverpool have to get through the next 11 league games without Van Dijk. They have to go big in terms of a signing.”

Dayot Upamecano is among the best centre-backs in the Bundesliga. The Frenchman, still only 21, has made an incredible name for himself, and he has already been linked with a move to some of the biggest clubs in the world.

Liverpool fans would certainly love a player of Upamecano’s quality. The RB Leipzig man is a different player compared to van Dijk, but he would still be a quality addition if Klopp can sign him in the January transfer window.

Here is how a few Reds fans reacted to Carragher’s comments
