As Tottenham prepare to face Chelsea today, two of the players involved have a ‘healthy bet’ that has nothing to do with football.
Much has already been written about today’s early kick-off between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.
Some have called it master versus apprentice, while others have branded it a test of Spurs’ title-challenging mettle. But two players who will come face-to-face this afternoon have a smaller battle of their own, with the loser finishing not just disappointed but also out of pocket.
Fresh from his stoppage-time winner against Cardiff City last weekend, Spurs midfielder Paulinho has revealed a bet he has with Chelsea’s Oscar.
Speaking to Globoesporte yesterday, Paulinho said, “Tomorrow is a very important game in the Premier League and I thought how we could take this time to help those in need.
“Then I talked to my friend Oscar, and I proposed to him a healthy bet. Whoever loses the game tomorrow will donate material that children with Down Syndrome require. So we will help those in need. This is the most important thing.”
It is a fantastic gesture from two footballers who have started the new campaign in fine form. And while Jose Mourinho and Andre Villas-Boas will both be desperate for three points, whichever team loses at least one of their players will make a difference to the lives of many.
So when the final whistle blows, and the Premier League table shows points lost or points gained, spare a thought for the two men who know there is life beyond the game, the lives of those they are able to change for the better, and applaud them for their gesture.
