Neymar’s place in Brazil’s World Cup squad remains uncertain, with debate growing over whether he still deserves a spot.

Recent performances for Santos have shown flashes of his quality, including meeting key physical targets set by Carlo Ancelotti’s staff, but concerns over consistency and fitness persist.

With opinions divided across the football world, the discussion has now reached the highest level in Brazil.

Brazil president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva confirmed this Tuesday that he spoke directly with Ancelotti about Neymar’s potential inclusion.

During a live broadcast on his YouTube channel, the 80-year-old politician explained how the topic came up in conversation with the national team coach.

“I had the chance to speak with Ancelotti, and he asked me: ‘Do you think Neymar should be called up?’ I said: ‘Look, Ancelotti, if he’s physically fit, he’s got the football. What I need to know is whether he actually wants it.’

“If he does, then he has to be professional. He can look at someone like Cristiano Ronaldo, he can look at Messi, and still go to the national team, because he’s not old yet. But he can’t expect to go just on his name. He has to earn it on the pitch,” Lula concluded.

Neymar set for Santos clash as transfer rumours grow

Neymar is expected to start as Santos face Recoleta in the Copa Sudamericana today.

The match could offer him a chance to build momentum against less demanding opposition and strengthen his case for selection.

At the same time, speculation over his future continues, with reports linking him to a potential move to MLS side FC Cincinnati.

Talks are believed to have started with his representatives, adding another layer of uncertainty to his situation.
