Everton’s new director of football Marcel Brands has told the Liverpool Echo that he spent all last Friday speaking to agents about potential new signings – but refused to tackle questions about PSV Eindhoven winger Hirving Lozano.

Having sacked manager Sam Allardyce and director of football Steve Walsh, Everton set themselves up for a busy summer, and they were able to present their replacements on Monday.

Manager Marco Silva has been brought in to replace Allardyce following a lengthy pursuit stretching back to October, whilst Marcel Brands left PSV Eindhoven to take over from Walsh.

Everton presented the new duo to the media for the first time on Monday afternoon, and Dutchman Brands discussed the topic most Toffees fans will be interested in – transfers.

Brands oversaw the signings of players such as Kevin Strootman, Georginio Wijnaldum, Dries Mertens, Jeffrey Bruma, Santiago Arias, Davy Propper and Luuk de Jong at PSV Eindhoven, and fans want to see great success from him this summer.

Brands has now told the Liverpool Echo that he spent the entirety of Friday talking to agents about potential signings, and Everton must move quickly given the World Cup and the early transfer deadline this summer.

Brands was also asked about a move for 19-goal PSV winger Hirving Lozano, but he attempted to dodge that question by suggesting he needs to analyse the Everton squad first.

“We must see,” said Brands. “We have a shorter time of normal because the market closes earlier and the WC too. It’s a busy time. When I started Friday I was calling all day and agents calling about new players and our players. It’s important to sit with Marco and make our own plans and then step-by-step what has to be done. It will be difficult.”

“The most important thing is to look at our own squad. We have 38 players. We have to look for next season. There is a few positions we look for targets. There will be discussions in the next few days with our scouts. We will look what is best for Everton,” he added when asked about Lozano.
