Lloris is currently yet to sign a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur, but Friedel has suggested that he expects an extension to be agreed.
Brad Friedel has told The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast that was broadcast on talkSPORT on December 12th 2016 that he would be hugely surprised if Tottenham allowed Hugo Lloris’ contract to run down.
The Daily Mirror previously reported that talks over a new deal for the Frenchman began in the summer, but are still yet to reach a resolution despite some of his teammates putting pen to paper at White Hart Lane.
The Mirror adds that Lloris’ frustration with the club’s inability to fight for trophies may prove to be a stumbling block to any new deal.
Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris
But Friedel – who worked with the 29-year-old before the American’s retirement in 2015 – has suggested that his former club would be making a massive mistake if they failed to agree a new contract.
“Knowing Mauricio, I’d be very, very surprised if he lets him walk out the door,” he told talkSPORT.
“Hugo came in and from the time he started playing, he’s been one of the most consistent performers for Tottenham and he’s one of the very best goalkeepers around.
“And when you have a very good goalkeeper that doesn’t get injured a lot, that’s very fit, that’s a leader, that’s a captain, you don’t let them walk out the door.”

Though Spurs are currently fifth in the Premier League and 10 points adrift of the summit, they boast the joint best defensive record in the division, and that is largely thanks to Lloris.
As Friedel alluded to, his consistency and leadership has allowed the back four in front of him to play with the kind of confidence that has allowed them to contribute going forwards as well as handle their defensive duties so capably.
And it could certainly be argued that keeping him at the club could boost their chances of enjoying success, both domestically and in Europe, enormously.
