West Ham United midfielder Flynn Downes is now likely to leave the club just a year since joining his boyhood club.

Flynn Downes may have his dream stint with West Ham United brought to an end this summer.

That is according to The Athletic, who claim that Downes is now ‘likely’ to leave West Ham this summer.

It’s noted that Southampton may be interested in signing Downes following their relegation to the Championship.

The Saints have appointed Russell Martin as their new manager, and he coached Downes with former club Swansea City.

A reunion may be ideal for all, with Downes no doubt lined up for a key role with a move to Southampton.

Downes only joined West Ham last summer, arriving in a £12million move from Swansea.

This was a dream come true for Downes, who grew up supporting West Ham and used to cheer the Irons on from the stands at Upton Park.

The 24-year-old was only given seven Premier League starts though and could be sold after just a year at the club.

Flynn Downes exit would leave West Ham needing midfield retool

News of Downes potentially moving on comes just as West Ham prepare to lose their star midfielder.

Declan Rice is set to leave West Ham for a move to Arsenal, leaving a gaping hole in the West Ham midfield.

Both he and Downes have West Ham at heart but their Hammers careers could end in very different ways.

West Ham seemingly plan to bring in two new midfielders to try and replace Rice’s output, but that would surely stretch to three new signings if Downes leaves too.

That’s a lot of business for West Ham to get done but they should have money to play with this summer as Moyes looks to raise the level of his playing squad.

Much of last summer’s transfer business hasn’t worked out with Maxwel Cornet and Gianluca Scamacca unable to impress, and Downes may join that group if Moyes decides to let him go.
