Boyd not convinced McInnes to Rangers is ‘dead’

Rangers appear to have failed in their attempts to bring Derek McInnes to Ibrox.

Rangers’ hopes of appointing Derek McInnes as manager have taken a serious blow – but Kris Boyd is not convinced the matter is done with.

Aberdeen released a statement on their official website with McInnes insisting his goal is to remain at Aberdeen, and chairman Stewart Milne welcoming his decision.

Rangers had submitted an approach for McInnes days earlier, as they sought to replace Pedro Caixinha.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd had suggested earlier in the day that McInnes to Rangers was close to a done deal.

Now with McInnes re-committing his future to Aberdeen, Rangers’ plans are unclear, currently committing to Graeme Murty until the end of the season.

Boyd is not convinced the situation is done with.

He told SkySports: “Derek has decided to stay at Aberdeen and that’s a surprise to everybody because the majority in Scotland thought he would have gone to Rangers, myself included.

“They (Rangers) are not going to open up the books for Derek to go through, so if he’s not been given permission to speak to Rangers, then’s he’s probably taken it off his own back to say he wants to stay at Aberdeen.

“But is it dead? we just don’t know.”

In the short-term, the situation seems clear cut, but of course the situation could change at the end of the season.

The question is whether Rangers are prepared to gamble and wait that long, and if at that stage the wait will be worth it.
