There is no way back for Dedryck Boyata at Celtic.
Ahead of last night’s game with AEK Athens, Brendan Rodgers was posed with questions about Dedryck Boyata.
Boyata did not travel to Greece, claiming to be injured, which was at odds with Rodgers’ earlier comments.
Celtic boss Rodgers could have chosen to take the high road, and say he was focused on the crucial game, and did not wish to discuss Boyata.
Instead he proverbially threw Boyata under the bus, branding the defender a liar.
Rodgers told The Evening Times: “Dedryck Boyata is fit, but he’s not here with us.”
Just hours earlier, Boyata had posted on Instagram, stating: “Unfortunately, I could not play because I’m not yet 100% operational.”
Boyata’s comments had earlier drawn a furious response from fans.
It followed reports in the Scottish Sun that he was aiming to force a transfer by going on strike, which the defender disputed.
Brendan Rodgers comments suggest that is the case, and increase the anger among the Celtic support towards the player.
Instead of uniting his squad, or ignoring the player entirely, Rodgers has made it near impossible for the defender to repair the damage.
It looks like his time at Celtic is done, and there is no way back for him, saving a desperate apology.
