Championship duo Aston Villa and West Brom are reportedly interested in signing Tyrone Mings on loan from Premier League outfit Bournemouth.

It just hasn’t gone to plan for Tyrone Mings since he left Ipswich Town for Bournemouth in an £8 million deal (The Guardian).

A number of serious injuries have stopped the highly-rated defender from fulfilling his potential and following in the footsteps of Josh King, Callum Wilson and David Brooks at the Vitality Stadium. The 25-year-old has started just two Premier League games all season.

But it is too soon to write Mings off just yet. He was one of the Championship’s most promising youngsters during his time with Ipswich after all with some critics tipping him for a future England call-up.

And he could be absolutely perfect for an Aston Villa side whose defensive deficiencies were ruthlessly exposed in last week’s 3-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic.

The Mail reports that Villa are battling Midland rivals West Brom to sign Mings on loan until the end of the season and he ticks a lot of boxes for Dean Smith.

After all, the 1982 European Champions are short of options at centre-half and have lacked a top quality left-back for far too long. Mings, crucially, is equally comfortable in both positions.

Mings was arguably the Championship’s best left-back in the 2014/15 season. So could he finally be the Neil Taylor upgrade Villa are crying out for?
