Bournemouth have seen their FA Cup campaign thwarted at the first hurdle as south coast rivals Brighton & Hove Albion fans ran out 3-1 winners in Saturday’s third-round encounter at the Vitality Stadium.

The Cherries wasted several good chances in the first half and were made to regret their profligacy when Anthony Knockaert edged the Seagulls ahead on 31 minutes by slotting home a Jurgen Locadia cutback.

Yves Bissouma then scored his first goal for Brighton just three minutes after Knockaert’s opener, beating Artur Boruc from around 30 yards out with a thunderous effort which cannoned off the woodwork en route to the back of the net.

The hosts picked up pace in the second half and, five minutes before the hour, halved the deficit when Marc Pugh found the corner of Jason Steele’s goal with a fine strike from the edge of the box.

However, it didn’t take long for Chris Hughton’s charges to restore their two-goal lead, Florin Andone scoring with a close-range header on 64 minutes and his side seeing the game out for a place in the fourth round.

Boss Eddie Howe came under some criticism from sections of the Bournemouth fanbase for picking a team which included fringe players, as noticed on Twitter after the game:
