Steven Gerrard’s Rangers reportedly wanted to sign Eamonn Brophy from Scottish Premiership rivals Killie.
Kilmarnock fans knew in their heart of hearts that life wouldn’t be the same without Steve Clarke. But even the most pessimistic factions of the Rugby Park faithful probably didn’t expect that it would be this bad in the post-Clarke era.
Back in May, Killie qualified for Europe for the first time in 18 years. It took just a matter of weeks, however, for Clarke’s successor Angelo Alessio to destroy all that progress.
The Ayrshire outfit were stunned by Welsh minnows Connah’s Quay over two legs and they have since lost both of their opening two Scottish Premiership games, going down to Rangers and Hamilton.
So Eamonn Brophy must be wondering what might have been. Though there is still time left in the transfer window for Rangers, who had shown an interest in May according to TEAMtalk, to make a move.
The Gers have since signed another skilful and versatile striker/number ten in Greg Stewart, but manager Steven Gerrard did admit to the Daily Record that he fancies another forward option despite thrashing Hibernian 6-1 on Sunday. That is surely enough to prick up Brophy’s ears.
The 23-year-old has started all four of Kilmarnock’s games in all competitions this season as he looks to match last season’s career-best tally of 12 goals in all competitions.
But barring a dramatic turnaround at Rugby Park, it seems that Killie under Alessio could soon find themselves scrapping at the wrong end of the table very soon.
With Rangers thriving both in Scotland and one the continent, scoring goals for fun and seemingly getting better by the week, a move in mid-August looks perfect both for player and club.
Brophy could only improve alongside the likes of Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos after all.
