West Ham United fans are not happy with German club Borussia Monchengladbach after a cheeky tweet over Reece Oxford’s future.
West Ham starlet Oxford – once regarded as one of the most highly-rated young players in English football – is somewhat in limbo at the moment.
The Hammers prodigy was farmed out on a season-long loan to German side Borussia Monchengladbach to gain more first-team experience this season.
But the club recalled the youngster in December so David Moyes could assess his ability and decide whether he wanted him as part of his injury-riddled first team squad.
He was promptly injured and turned in a terrible performance against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup when he did return.
His future has been in doubt since with reports linking him with a return to the German club.
But with West Ham’s injury woes, he may well be needed in East London.
Fans have been perplexed by continued talk that Oxford wants a permanent move to the Bundesliga side.
And they weren’t best pleased when Borussia Monchengladbach made a cheeky comment about the player’s future on Twitter.
Accompanying a video of Oxford failing miserably when trying his hand on a golf driving range, the German club’s media team said: “Wrong club perhaps, Reece Oxford?”
That sparked a barrage of abuse from Hammers fans including taunts over the Monchengladbach’s quality compared with rivals Dortmund.
Oxford, who shot to prominence when he made his debut with a midfield masterclass in a 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates in the opening game of the 2015/16 season aged just 16, can only play for West Ham or Monchengladbach for the remainder of the season as per UEFA rules.
