Boro were leading against the Championship high-flyers at the Riverside but an injury-time Kalvin Phillips goal meant a share of the spoils.
Middlesbrough played out a 1-1 draw with Leeds United in Saturday’s early Championship kickoff at the Riverside Stadium but will rue their inability to hang on to their lead after conceding in the 11th minute of injury time.
The first half finished goalless but Boro’s Lewis Wing opened the scoring early on after the restart when he latched on to George Friend’s cutback, took a touch to set himself up, and rifled into the bottom corner of the net.
Leeds dominated possession over the 90 minutes but struggled to forge any concrete opportunities until midway through the second half, with Kemar Roofe, Pontus Jansson and Patrick Bamford all weighing in with efforts.
Play was held up late in the second half while paramedics tended to an incident on the visitors’ bench, Jack Clarke requiring medical help, and he was carried off on a stretcher receiving oxygen and taken to hospital as a precaution.
The delay resulted in 12 minutes of stoppage time being added on and, in the 101st minute, Whites ace Kalvin Phillips sent a header beyond Boro goalkeeper Darren Randolph to claim a share of the spoils.
Following the game, some Middlesbrough fans took to Twitter and rued their team’s tactics, having sat back for much of the game after breaking the deadlock, and pointed the finger at Tony Pulis:
