Oriol Rey’s first season at Leeds showed great promise with the talented youngster starring for the under-23s.
Able to play in both defence and midfield, Rey established himself as a key part of Carlos Corberan’s side and fans began clamouring for him to get a first team chance late in the season.
That did not happen under Paul Heckingbottom, but under imminent next boss Marcelo Bielsa [SkySports], Rey could thrive.
Rey joined from Barcelona’s La Masia academy and could not have asked for a better football education.
Early impressions of him at Leeds show he is having no trouble adapting off the field or on it, becoming integral to Leeds’ under-23s late season run.
Marcelo Bielsa is famed for his fluid and unique tactical systems, which involve playing three at the back and six midfielders.
Rey is born to thrive in his system, either as one of three centre-backs given license to roam forward and play the ball out, or as a link man between attack and defence.
It could cost Leeds millions to find a player like Rey who Bielsa is happy with, but fortunately they did the hard work a year ago by persuading him to join.
Everything is set up for the 20-year-old to make a real name for himself in 2018/19.
