Bookmaker SkyBet have listed Newcastle United as the 15/8 favourites to sign Ravel Morrison should the controversial former Premier League midfielder end up leaving Lazio this summer.

The Shields Gazette reports that the Magpies are on the lookout for a new winger, and despite closing in on a loan deal for Christian Atsu, it appears that Rafael Benitez may be keeping his options open regarding potential targets in the attacking midfield area.

SkyBet believe that Morrison is most likely to stay with his current club, offering odds of 8/11 on the 23-year-old staying put beyond this window.

But based on SkyBet’s odds, it appears that Newcastle cannot be ruled out of the running for his signature, while their Championship rivals Aston Villa also appear to be in contention, with odds of 4/1 being offered on Roberto Di Matteo landing the former Manchester United man.

It would undoubtedly be a gamble if Benitez did look to land Morrison. His talent is undeniable, and he could unquestionably be an asset in their quest for promotion to the Premier League, but question marks over his attitude refuse to go away and appear to be preventing him from truly realising his potential.

Since his move to Italy, he has made just four Serie A appearances and is yet to start in the top flight for the Biancocelesti, and supporters may be wary that his arrival at St James’ Park could potentially upset the team spirit.

But if Benitez is able to get the best out of a player who has occasionally threatened to develop into something very special, then Newcastle would not only have little problem going up but would also take little time to reestablish themselves at the highest level.
