The former England captain, who is leaving Chelsea at the end of his contract this summer, has been strongly linked with a move to the Saints’ south coast rivals Bournemouth.

And according to the bookies, Bournemouth [evens] remain the most likely club to sign Terry before 3 September.

Southampton, though, are next in line – along with any Major League Soccer club – ahead of linked duo Brighton & Hove Albion [8/1] and West Bromwich Albion [10/1].

The Saints are releasing Uruguayan centre-back Martin Caceres this summer, while reported Chelsea target Virgil van Dijk is still expected to depart despite Liverpool’s public withdrawal of interest this week.

It is therefore some surprise that Terry has not yet been formally linked with a move to St Mary’s.

Nevertheless, Southampton may have to move quick if they want to sign the five-time Premier League winner, and the uncertainty surrounding the future of manager Claude Puel is unlikely to aid their cause.

Should Southampton make a move for the former Chelsea captain?
