Southampton have been listed as the bookmakers’ favourite to sign Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs, while Newcastle United are second-favourites.

According to bookmaker Sky Bet, Southampton are the 6/5 favourites to sign Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs during the summer transfer window.

The Saints may well need to sign a new left-back during this window, with the Daily Mail reporting earlier in the week that Manchester City plan to offer £25 million for Ryan Bertrand – though it remains to be seen how the south coast club respond if such an approach is made.

Sky Bet appear to believe that there is a good chance that their response may include a move for Gunners man Gibbs, having listed Mauricio Pellegrino’s men as the 6/5 favourites for his signature.

Gibbs was left out of the Arsenal squad for their pre-season tour of Australia and China, and with Sead Kolasinac arriving at the Emirates earlier in the window, it would certainly hardly be a surprise if Arsene Wenger was open to selling Gibbs.

The Daily Mirror reported in June that the Gunners want £15 million for the defender despite the fact that he has just one year left on his contract.

However, Sky Bet appear to believe that the race for the 27-year-old’s signature is not clear, with Newcastle currently listed as the 3/1 second-favourites, while Watford – who the Mirror suggested were not prepared to meet his asking price – are at 8/1.

Given how well Bertrand has performed since arriving at St Mary’s, it would not be surprising if the fans were a little disappointed if he was sold and Gibbs came in as his replacement – given that he has struggled to hold down a place in Wenger’s side.

But with the two transfer reports regarding Bertrand and Gibbs suggesting that Southampton will have £10 million left over if the two deals did take place, the Saints fans will surely be a lot happier if the remaining funds are also invested in the squad.
