Should Newcastle United move for the Everton defender this summer?
Everton’s Phil Jagielka
Newcastle United are second favourites to sign Everton’s Phil Jagielka this summer, according to Bet Victor.
The Magpies (6/1) are behind only West Bromwich Albion (4/1) on the bookmaker’s list of potential destinations for the England international – tied with Southampton.
Rafa Benitez’s side are said to be on the lookout for central defensive additions this summer, with Hull City’s Harry Maguire and Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross strongly linked with moves to St James’ Park already.
Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with an interest in Maguire, however, while Shawcross has been offered a new deal at the Bet 365 Stadium.

And Jagielka could be the ideal short-term recruit in the event that neither player arrives on Tyneside.
With more than 300 Premier League appearances and 40 England caps to his name, Jagielka is arguably better than any of Newcastle’s current defensive options – in particular Chancel Mbemba and Grant Hanley – while his presence could have a positive impact on the likes of Jamaal Lascelles, as it did for another young English centre-back in John Stones at Everton.

And with only a year to run on his contract, the Mancunian’s arrival could even save Newcastle money as they seek to build a side capable of pushing on at top flight level.
